Jordyn Mantz scored 19 points Wednesday and Saydee Aganus added 10, and Kamehameha turned back upset-minded Keaau 49-31 in a BIIF girls basketball game at the Cougars’ gym.
The Warriors (5-2), who remained in a first place tie with Honokaa in Division II, jumped out to a 19-4 lead after the first quarter and led 31-14 at the half.
Looking to make a mark this season with a surprise win, the Cougars (3-4) once again were led by freshmen. Destynee Williams scored 10 and Anela Gonzalez had six.
Honokaa 51, Ka’u 22: Kayla Branco scored 19 points and Aulani Cordero added 10 as the Dragons cruised to victory in Pahala.
Kianie Mederios-Dancel led the Trojans with eight.
Boys
Ka’u 69, St, Joseph 41: Madito Tamayo led all scorers at Hilo Civic with 17 points and Andre Carvalho chipped in 16 as the Trojans ripped off 28 points in the second quarter to race to a 41-14 halftime lead.
Nainoa Ke scored 11 for Ka’u, which moved a half-game behind Pahoa for fourth in D-II.
Ruka Suda led the Cardinals with 10.
Hilo 73, Kealakehe 12: The Vikings went on the road and improved to 7-1 ahead of their showdown against rival Waiakea on Friday at home.
Tuesday – boys
Konawaena 56, Pahoa 37: Paka Cacoulidis scored 23 points and Austin Ewing added 10 as the visiting Wildcats pulled away in the fourth quarter, improving to 4-2.
Damon Romero led Pahoa (2-3) with 16 points and Lansen Aranaydo had 10.
Monday – boys
Honokaa 72, Ka’u 47: Caleb Yamasaki and Kamuela Spencer-Herring scored 13 points apiece as the host Dragons broke open a tight game after one quarter.
Kolten Caravalho and Gene Ansagay added 10 each for Honokaa (4-1), which outscored the Trojans by 17-8 in the second quarter and 20-13 in the third after leading by one after the first eight minutes.
Zachary Kai paced Ka’u with nine.
The Dragons host Hawaii Prep on Saturday in a rematch of last season’s D-II final.
